I was very intrigued the first time I saw this movie, but it is kind of boring. The first Star Trek movie was bound to be somewhat awkward. I'll give it props, but it wasn't wonderful.
I kind of enjoy the theory that the alien entity/ship/cloud (for lack of a specific definition) was an early version of the borg. What do you guys think?

Alls I know is that the first time I remember seeing this movie..... I fell asleep half way through. I thought the plot was a okay, but the editing and the pacing of the film was bad. I give it a 5 on a scale of 1-10

Yeah. The editing was bad. They were kind of competing with Star Wars at the time and wanted to show off the speciall fx. It got a little old after a while. I can see why you fell asleep.

Actually, Gene Roddenberry and Jeff Katzenburg wrote the screenplay from scratch, so it wasn't based on a lost episode.
The weakness of ST:TMP was caused by the abrupt, and somewhat rocky end of TOS' third, and last season. You see, the producers and writers wanted to boost the ratings, so, they tried to change around the nature of the characters and the story lines, but it just didn't work. They ended up practically killing the series (only the actors managed to save it's dignity). And so, when ST:TMP was made, they had to sort of, start a new, because they couldn't leave off from the series, because there was nothing to leave off of! Also, the editor didn't have enough time and money to edit all the FX, so some of the best scenes took a backseat to the effects, which weakened the storyline greatly.
In conclusion, it the movie wasn't what it was supposed to be. The character chemistry wasn't there, the storyline was weak, and the effects became tiring at a point. I'd give this movie a 5.5, and say "better luck next time, guys".
Which is true, because the had way better luck the next time.

They not only had better luck, but they had a better movie -- a movie that you don't seem to apreciate much.

True, Aedilus. "The Wrath of Kahn" did quite good with the box office and fans, but didn't do well with me. I just can't watch it, well at least not up until the end. It's perfectly fine until the chamber scene, then I either have to turn it off, or leave the room. I can't watch Spock die. And when Scotty plays "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes afterwords... That's it. I always become overly emotional when watching it.
Hence, my nick name, emotional Vulcan [emo-Vulcan].

It is pretty emotional. It's too bad that Spock dying ruins the film for you. Makes me somewhat emotional... j/j
