The actor or the character?

Hi everyone,

There are a lot of genres where different actors have played the same character (eg, Superman, Batman, even Sherlock Holmes!)

As far as Star Trek is concerned, do people think its a case of the actor who portrays the character or the actual character thats more important.

For example, will William Shatner be the only Capt Kirk? Will it be acceptable to one day have another actor portray Capt Kirk on screen?

From my point of view, because Trekkies believe so much in Star Trek, the actor and character they play end up being one and the same. Therefore I would have to be among those who think that for example, Shatner is Kirk and Kirk is Shatner and another actor would ruin it!

I agree. The actors add just as much to a character, if not more, than the actual writers do. Could you imagine any one else playing Spock? Bones? Data? Oh, and no one else was better suited to be captain Picard than Patrick Stewart!

Altho Pat Stewart made a great Captain Picard
i believe that micheal Caine would have done a better job

Interesting to note the current new movie rumours that Matt Damon will play a young Capt Kirk!

I find that idea ok for some reason.

I beleive that the actor does nake the character. Even in small roles that are on any of the Star Trek series it is kind of hard to picture anyone else in those parts. I mean can you imagine anyone else playing mrs troi?

Yes, made for the role and who can forget Capt. Picard's attempts to avoid her!
